Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Thursday August 7, 2007

Posted by Ashleigh in The Man Who Was Thursday by GK Chesterton.

1. What did you think when Gregory’s plan to convince Syme they weren’t serious anarcharists backfired? What were your thoughts on him comparing their movement to the Christians in the Catacombs?

2. Were you surprised by Syme’s reaction and the outcome that resulted?

3. Do you have any favorite quotes from this chapter?

4. Any additional thoughts?

1.) I thought Syme’s reaction to Gregory’s tepid speech was brilliant and funny. The part about comparing their movement to Christians in the Catacombs rather confusing, and I wasn’t sure what he was getting at, other than to make Syme believe he was “playing the fool” again and trying to make him believe they were harmless.

2.) I was surprised by Syme’s reaction, but thought it was a pretty smart way to continue under cover.

Well, it seems that Gregory’s plan didn’t backfire – that he did convince Syme that he was a serious Anarchist. Even at “possible sacrifice of (his) life and honour” as he had earlier vowed in Chapter 1. However, it was fun to watch Syme push Gregory into a feverish fury as turned the tide of the crowd and was himself voted onto the General Council of the Anarchists of Europe. hehe.
