I feel like the end of this book got left hanging. It is hard to go back now when it has been almost a month since finishing it. I was a little surprised by the ending and yet really wasn’t and I didn’t feel too emotional about Emma killing herself….fitting for a DRAMA QUEEN. I felt so bad for their daughter and her husband but the daughter especially. How truly sad to be so wrapped up in yourself that you leave nothing for your offspring.

I did really enjoy this book. I didn’t think I was going to like it as much as I did. I remember reading about the first affair and thinking whoa wait a second what just happened??? Did she just have an affair? The way Flaubert wrote was so refreshing…no details but you knew. It was a nice change. He is an amazing writer in terms of making the mundane daily details of life come alive and fun to read. The way he describes the characters and develops them was very captivating. And the underlying message of the book was very convicting.

This was a hard read for me, I was so frustrated with Emma through the whole book and found I disliked her. She was self-centered and she had so much, but could never find happiness or even some contentment.

Bethany, I totally agree that I was not emotional about Emma’s suicide, other than what I felt for her poor husband.

I was relieved to finish and go on to the next book and I hardly ever say that!!
